I wrote this article in the park today in my head. Here's what you should know:
THE CRAZY FEMINISTS WERE RIGHT
And I should know, my mom was one of them, in fact, she was both the craziest and most feminist woman I have literally ever known, and she pushed me to stand up for myself just the same. It's true she took it out on me, what men had done to women, archetypally, and to her, individually, but theirs was literally the first generation of women to find their voice since written history, so I forgive them, it could only be archetypal at times.
My mother ruled, or raised me, alone -- my father was a teacher who had passed when I was one -- and sometimes the presence of adult men would be tolerated in the home, which I half-owned, but they never had authority, my mother's word was final, non-negotiable. She was a brilliant artist, every stroke of her acrylic paintbrush delirious in a day-dreamt vision of beauty, passionate and intense in every moment of the process of creation, full of ideas, large in spirit, eventually plastering businesses in my hometown with giant murals and the like.
The crazy feminists were right, and she was one of them, the first to claim their voice since Urukagina, in their maternal line, the youngest of three sisters, no brothers, the renegade, the hot-tempered one, the short-circuit, the black sheep, the one who called out 'bullshit' clear and loud when it appeared, she was a teenager in the 60s, and the cultural shift was palpable in the family, the older sisters were of a different time, they listened to different music, and they spoke a little differently, and they didn't do drugs, except of course cigarettes and getting shitfaced, like all Ontario WASPs.
The crazy feminists were right: don't tone police me bitch, don't touch me, I'm not in your army, say it like you would to a man, don't patronize me, I don't have to do what you tell me, who do you think you are, my body, my choice--Irigiray was right: sometimes it's rational to be irrational, when the game is 'rigged' and feminine hysteria is pathologized, not channeled into archetypal or artistic vision--every steam engine within us needs an outlet, Freud was right, and when suppressed, it bubbles over in the wrong direction, the violent feminist we are meant to fear, for how else could the early waves gain footholds? Feminism in its early days, was necessarily terrorism. This is what my mother taught me.
Today Roe v Wade has been lost, and most of the girls I've met along the way did NOT know we're at war and that The Handmaid's Tale is real, for all intents and purposes today. I was slow to realize this as well. I haven't spoken up enough yet either but I can tell you what I did in private: my heart aches as I remember the pleading tone of women I called, across the country, and then the province, during lockdown; I worked the phones from home for Jagmeet Singh, and Andrea Horvath, who, bless her heart, had said the right thing first: your body, your choice.
Some force conspired to convert her, and the cries of agony were only heard by me sometimes, I'd write it in the notes and I am writing it to you, but there are no recordings, and it can be hard to convey in the notes, if anyone reads them. I was cold-calling pro-choice women to ask them for their money to support a vaccine mandate, indirectly, by supporting the NDP -- they asked the obvious, "What happened to my body, my choice?", they stated the obvious, "I've been voting NDP all my life because it's the most pro-choice vote available in Canada, what am I supposed to do now?" I had to tell them, sadly the truth: they had no choice, no major party opposed the mandate so the point was moot: the PPC won't win and this issue will recede and poverty will still exist (and Doug Ford is still a problem today.)
And in some ways the issue has receded, for the courts have intervened declaring Chrystia Freeland a Criminal, not a Feminist! And of course we know the NDP was 'only along for the ride' with the Liberals, which is something to prevent in the next election cycle: a collapse into a two-party system in Canada. (So write the NDP to demand they run me against her: ndp.ca/contact.)

Your mom sounds like she was a cool lady. Would be quite curious to see a photo or some art!
