... I feel like I have 'Political Whiplash', not only from the last 20 years of political upheaval, but from just the last two days -- yesterday, I entered Little Gaza for the first time, and heard from... a Human Rights Lawyer. Today, I entered a Rebel News live event for the first time and heard from... a Human Rights lawyer! I was the only leftist visible in the room today, other than Glenn Greenwald, and the previous day, I was the only old white man in sight for the talk.
As a 'dual outsider' I observed that both groups seem to agree on one thing: HUMAN RIGHTS. The right accuses the left of double-standards, and the left accuses the right of double-standards, but ultimately there is a shared legal fight for a shared legal foundation to be preserved and extended, and made progressively more consistent and universal.
A few weeks earlier, there was a similar confluence, parties as disparate as Socialist Action and Jordan Peterson came out guns a blazing to attack the Online Harms Bill, which is truly astounding in the Minority Report dystopia it threatens to impose on my homeland. But when an old man gave me a "FREE PALESTINE" bracelet a few days prior at Little Gaza he had extensive knowledge of the middle east but none of what Trudeau is up to, and it's a lot.
Today, Ezra suggested the bill will be used against Jews to label pro-Israeli statements as hate speech, and Glenn Greenwald added later what I told the old man at the encampment in stronger terms:
The online harms bill will allow anyone advertising a palestine protest to be jailed for life for online hate speech. I am not fucking kidding, if you're reading this, now go watch the podcasts that I linked to above — if you want this protest movement to succeed and stop 'the' war machine, or ANY war machine, we MUST BLOCK THE ONLINE HARMS BILL. PASS IT ON.
I didn't hear about the online harms bill at Little Gaza, even though it threatens to destroy them -- here are some other things I didn't hear and where I didn't hear them:
WHAT I DIDN'T HEAR AT LITTLE GAZA SPEECHES AND TALKS
- What to do about global antisemitism (One Exception: On May Day, Anna Jessup said we have to go after Freeland.)
WHAT I DIDN'T HEAR AT THE REBEL/RUMBLE FREE SPEECH EVENT
- What to do about the influence of corporate money on speech--eg zero discussion of CITIZEN'S UNITED
